Ireland’s first five-star hotel in Galway in over 20 years will open in May 2026. The Hawthorn by Galway Bay aims to be a new destination for golfers and travellers exploring the Wild Atlantic Way.

Golf and Outdoor Experiences

Set on Ireland’s west coast near Galway city, The Hawthorn blends championship golf with the area’s natural beauty. The resort’s 18-hole course, originally designed by Ryder Cup player Christy O’Connor Jnr, is currently being improved, focusing on bunker upgrades to enhance play while respecting its original design. Director of golf Dean Montgomery says the changes will help attract international golfers.

The course is known for its hawthorn trees and Atlantic winds, making it a challenge for all playing levels. Notably, it hosted the West of Ireland Golf Classic in 1999, welcoming prominent golfers including Justin Rose and Padraig Harrington.

Accommodation and Dining

The new hotel offers 114 guest rooms, with 47 junior suites and 17 penthouse suites. The Skylark restaurant and The Oystercatcher Bar will offer views over the golf course and Galway Bay. Other amenities include a chocolatier, a Whiskey Room, and a Wine Cellar with curated tastings.

Wellness and Leisure

The Spa at The Hawthorn promises deep relaxation, offering treatment rooms and outdoor bathing rituals that connect guests with the coastal environment. For those looking to explore further, walking trails, sailing trips, and sea safaris are available, making it easy to enjoy the Wild Atlantic Way.

For women golfers or anyone planning a trip to Ireland’s scenic west, The Hawthorn by Galway Bay is set to combine top-level golf, spa experiences, and local hospitality along one of Europe’s most famous coastal routes.
